Free Assistive Technology Trials
We know assistive technology can really make a difference for students. Sometimes figuring out just what device will work the best can require some trial and error, hands on testing. If you are considering AT, but haven’t tried the technology yourself or would like to see it in action first, our Technology Lending Center provides free AT demonstrations on-site.
Portable Word Processors: You have Alphasmarts, but your child needs a larger screen, or would benefit from hearing his writing spoken aloud to him for editing. We can bring out all related devices for you to compare.
Scan and Read Software: A student’s reading ability is several grade levels below what she can understand auditorially. You’ve heard of Kurzweil software, but how does it compare with the others out there? Demonstrations of these software packages, along with 30-day trial CDs, can help you learn the differences.
Augmentative Communication: For a child with limited speech, you are looking at the options for communication devices that have a set of up to eight choices at once. What is the difference between a Cheaptalk, a TechTalk, and GoTalk? Which one has the features that best meet your needs?
Demonstrations give you a chance to compare devices yourself, so that YOU can make the decision as to what will work best. These demonstrations are not evaluations—we do not review student files, do not evaluate student abilities. We simply demonstrate the devices you would like to see, and leave the decision making up to you. And if a single demonstration isn’t enough and you want to borrow the device to try it out for a few weeks, join our Technology Lending Center ($125 annual membership fee for school districts and $35 for families), and we can leave the device with you for a more comprehensive trial.
