Learning for Life Workshop Series
Communicating with AAC: Beyond Wants and Needs
Traditionally Alternative Augmentative Communication intervention has focused on providing AAC users with a way to communicate their basic wants and needs. This workshop will provide teachers, speech therapists, families and other professionals with ideas and intervention strategies to shift the previous focus toward social pragmatic communication using a variety of media and graphics.
Participants will gain skill and knowledge in customizing various communication devices so AAC users can move beyond the wants and needs model and into communication for participation, building relationships and integration into their communities. Through the use of assistive technology, specifically AAC, individuals with communication deficits of all levels can enhance both receptive and expressive language skills through the use of visual language systems.
