AT Stories to Make You Smile

We’d like to share two assistive technology stories that made us smile today.  The first is from The New York Times; it details how physical therapist Michael Konstalid creates accommodations for students from scraps he finds in the basements of New York’s public schools.

Advancing Opportunities has two Rehabilitation Specialists who travel around the state in mobile workshops creating custom accommodations.  If you’d like more information about how you could get a one-of-a-kind accommodation, send us an email: info@advopps.org.

The second comes from author and teacher Heather Kirnlanier’s blog, Star in Her Eye. The blog chronicles her experiences as the mother of Fiona, a beautiful little girl with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome.  The entry A Year With Speak for Yourself. Part 1 will be interesting to anyone who is familiar with the process of selecting an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device.   Fiona’s conversations got us grinning. Advancing Opportunities’ Assistive Technology Services team does AAC evaluations and families and schools can borrow all kinds of devices from our Technology Lending Center to try before they buy.

So much to learn!
